Magnuson Scholar 2021

I am pleased to congratulate Tao Zheng, who has been named the 2021 UW School of Nursing Magnuson Scholar. Each of the six Health Sciences schools names one Magnuson Scholar annually.

The Magnuson program is funded from a $2 million endowment created by the Warren G. Magnuson Institute for Biomedical Research and Health Professions Training. The late Washington senator Warren G. Magnuson, in whose name the program was established, had a strong commitment to improving the nation’s health through biomedical research. He was instrumental in establishing the National Institutes of Health, Medicare, and Medicaid during his long career in the U.S. Senate.

Magnuson Scholars receive both recognition and a substantial scholarship award that enables them to pursue their studies. Tao has a longstanding interest in cardiovascular nursing. He has clinical experience in cardiothoracic intensive care and cardiac medicine, and will use his scholarship to continue his PhD research, which seeks to understand changes in sleep quality as they relate to changes in cognition, psychological symptoms, and health-related quality of life in individuals with advanced heart failure after receiving a left ventricular assist device (LVAD).

We look forward to seeing the results of Tao’s research, and to watching him attain his professional goals in the years to come.
