2019 Clinical Preceptors of the Year

In everything from the arts to medicine, there are behind-the-scenes supporting personnel without whom success would not be possible. They aren’t often seen, they rarely share in the applause or praise, and their enormous contributions are too often unrecognized. For the School of Nursing, preceptors are that group.

One of the most vital elements in educating an advanced practice nurse is clinical experience. Nurses at all levels need to work in real-world circumstances, where they learn to blend cognitive and technical skills, respond correctly under pressure, and multitask efficiently. For advanced practice nurses, the opportunity to gain this experience is made possible by preceptors—healthcare professionals who volunteer to mentor students in the clinics, hospitals, and offices where they see patients.

Preceptors give generously of their time and professional knowledge. They take responsibility for seeing that the next generation of nurse leaders is fully prepared and armed with practical experience that complements their classroom and other learning.

Each year we name a number of Clinical Preceptors of the Year. It is a difficult choice, because we feel that all of our preceptors are worthy of special recognition. In honoring a few, we are honoring them all.
