#1 Where We Stand

We are honored that the UW School of Nursing has been named a leading educator of nurses among public colleges/universities offering graduate programs by US News & World Report. We were ranked #1 among public institutions with Doctor of Nursing Practice programs (#3 overall) and tied for #1 among public schools with master’s degree programs (tied for #6 overall).

These rankings place us at the top of almost 600 accredited nursing schools with master’s and/or doctoral programs in the nation. U.S. News calculated weighted averages of 15 indicators for the master’s ranking and 14 for the DNP ranking. Many of these indicators overlapped – namely all the research activity indicators and some faculty resources factors including the percentage of faculty members with important achievements, faculty credentials and faculty participation in nursing practice.

While rankings are not totally reflective of our excellence, I am incredibly proud of the hard work of our faculty and staff, and the commitment of all three schools in educating future nurses who serve not only their patients but also the profession and the entire health care community.

The UW School of Nursing educates nurse leaders who are changing the face of healthcare nationally and internationally. We continue to lead on initiatives such as antiracism, global health, population health, and addressing healthcare disparities. Our PhD graduates are doing innovative research that seeks to foster wellness as well as treat illness. Our DNP graduates are providing independent clinical care, often in rural areas, tribal nations and communities, and other unserved or greatly underserved regions. Our BSN graduates are staffing hospitals, clinics, and other points of healthcare access throughout the state and nation. Most importantly, nurses from our faculty and student body have been on the frontlines responding to the pandemic, from providing virtual health visits to vaccinating vulnerable populations.

We are humbled by the recognition, and committed to maintaining the excellence that earned us that recognition.
