Accommodations for disabilities

We are committed to ensuring access to higher education experiences for a diverse student population. The UW Office of Disability Resources for Students (DRS) recognizes disability as an aspect of diversity that is integral to society and the campus community.

Academic accommodations are determined for students on an individual basis. Requested accommodations must be supported by the documented effects of the disability.

The School of Nursing partners with DRS to provide appropriate accommodation and support. Students with disabilities are encouraged to meet with a DRS counselor to explore possible accommodations and services. You should start this process as soon as you have received an admissions notice.

Currently enrolled students should start the process as soon as there is an anticipated need. Once accommodations are established, they are applied proactively rather than retroactively.

Service animals

Service animals are welcome at the UW School of Nursing.

  • Per the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) 2010 Revised Requirements, service animals are defined as dogs that are individually trained to work or perform tasks for people with disabilities.
  • Service animals accompany people with disabilities in all areas of the facility where the public is normally allowed to go.
  • Under the ADA, service animals must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered, unless these devises interfere with the service animal’s work or the individual’s disability prevents using these devices. In that case, the individual must maintain control of the animal through voice, signal, or other effective controls.
