Thank You to Salal Credit Union for Supporting Nurse Camp

Since 2008, UW Nurse Camp has provided high school students from underrepresented communities the chance to learn more about opportunities in higher education, nursing school and a nursing career. Students attending the camp engage in a variety of sessions on topics such as self-care, social determinants of health and health disparities, how to properly put on personal protective equipment (PPE), how to apply for college, and careers in the nursing field.  Students are given the chance to talk with current undergraduate and graduate nursing students to learn firsthand what it entails to be a nursing student and learn about different nursing degrees. In addition, participants have time to talk with various nurses and practitioners in the field.

This year, we are proud to recognize the generous support of Salal Credit Union to Nurse Camp to help sustain and grow this important program, strengthening the pipeline of future nurses in our local communities.

“Healthcare has always been an important area of support for our organization and we wanted to find a new way to continue our contribution to the local nursing community,” said Matt Vance, President of Marketing & Product Development at Salal Credit Union.

Nurse Camp 2018

“For years we have invested annually in nursing scholarships to support and encourage future generations of nurses. Nurse Camp offers a new way to expose, education and inspire the next generation of nurses. We are so proud to play a small role in helping the program reach new heights.,” said Vance.

Students like Justina Lang say they have benefitted from Nurse Camp. A first-generation college student who attended nurse camp and is now in co-lead of DAWGS (the UW School of Nursing’s Diversity Awareness Group). As part of DAWGS, Lang plays a major role in running the program.

“Nurse Camp let me see what the career really entails, and it also gave me a support system,” says Lang. “Having access to people who you really liked  and could ask for help — that’s something that I really wanted to pay forward.”

To align with the UW campus being online during the summer quarter, UW Nurse Camp will not held be in person. Instead, there will be a fully online Nursing Summer Symposium held July 12-16, 2021. Applications are open until May 1.
