Erin Abu-Rish Blakeney PhD, RN

My program of research is motivated by the knowledge that all too often our health research and care systems do not safely, efficiently, equitably, or effectively meet the needs of patients or their family members along the bench to bedside spectrum.

In my work, I utilize frameworks and methods from the fields of implementation science and interprofessional/team science and have primarily focused on experiences and outcomes of patients with a diagnosis of advanced heart failure.

Current areas of inquiry include: (1) identification of best practices and promising models for improving interdisciplinary team dynamics and outcomes in education, research, and clinical settings; (2) understanding mechanisms of action connecting the quality of communication, relationships, and processes/structures with team effectiveness and team and patient outcomes; (3) discovering strategies to implement and sustain team-based approaches in research and practice.

What classes do you teach?

I serve on doctoral committees and advise undergraduate and graduate students with whom I have shared research interests. I also offer team training as part of the ITHS Team Science Core and guest lecture on topics related to teamwork, communication, implementation science, and patient safety.

What do you love about the UW School of Nursing?

I love the enthusiasm for learning, collaboration, and new ideas among our students, faculty, and staff. As someone who grew up in rural Washington State, I also love that the shared focus of our programs is to improve health and health care locally and globally by turning ideas into impact through innovative science, education, and practice/service.
