A Remarkable Year

2022-2023 UW School of Nursing Year in Review

From the desk of the dean

Reading this Year in Review content reminded me how much we accomplished, and how many of you who are reading this were part of that.

In every major area—research, teaching, community engagement—we innovated, created, challenged ourselves, and excelled. At the same time, we advanced our goal of doing the work needed to advance equity in both healthcare and healthcare education access.

As you read this Year in Review, thank yourself for having been part of something special. That’s what I am doing as I prepare to begin a new professional challenge as dean of the Yale University School of Nursing. I will be watching and looking for the UW SoN’s future successes.

10 Years of Transformation

On April 3, 2023, Dean Azita Emami announced she had accepted the position of the Yale School of Nursing, starting August 1. In honor of her decade of work at the UW School of Nursing, we take a look back at the transformation of nursing and nursing education under her superb leadership.

The year’s highlights

As UW’s 148th Commencement approaches on June 10, we’re looking back on a remarkable year at the UW School of Nursing, UW Bothell School of Nursing & Health Studies, and UW Tacoma School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership. Here are some of the many highlights.

Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing expansion

The UW School of Nursing completed its Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree expansion in connection to Washington state’s initiative on growing the nursing workforce. The ABSN program doubled in size to 128 students as of spring quarter.

Global alliances

In collaboration with the Queen of Sweden, the UW School of Nursing established the first and only U.S. site for the Queen Silvia Nursing Award, bestowed annually by the Queen for innovative research on dementia care. This year, UW School of Nursing student Juana Gallegos was selected as the second United States recipient. She is a Master of Nursing student in the UW Tacoma School of Nursing & Healthcare Leadership. The Tacoma campus’s nursing degrees are accredited as part of the tri-campus UW School of Nursing. Read a Q&A with Gallegos.

Historic fundraising

The UW School of Nursing is on track to meet its largest private fundraising goal in recent history, with contributions from individual donors, corporations, and private foundations totaling $9.2M as of May 2023 toward a $10.4M goal. We also received a $6.6M Premera Blue Cross Grant that established the UW Psychiatry Fellowship for Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ARNP) program, a first-of-its-kind partnership between the UW School of Nursing and the UW School of Medicine.

Anti-Racism Center gets a new name

The former University of Washington School of Nursing Center for Anti-Racism in Nursing embarked on an inclusive and community-led name-change process with the UW School of Nursing community and officially renamed it the Manning Price Spratlen Center for Anti-Racism & Equity in Nursing (MS-CARE in Nursing), integrating the names of two black women and groundbreaking nurses Frankie Manning and Lois Price Spratlen.

Husky 100

UW School of Nursing students Karl Cristie Figuracion and Dariga Tugan, and UW Bothell School of Nursing & Health Studies students Abigail Maurera and Jadyn Marie Se Jesus, were selected for this year’s Husky 100. The Husky 100 are UW juniors, seniors and graduate students from all three campuses who are maximizing their Husky Experience. We are incredibly proud of their valuable work and dedication to the nursing field.

National Nurses Month

During the month of May, we celebrated National Nurses Month and spotlighted International Day of the Midwife, National Nurses Day, Students Nurses Day and more. We are grateful for the more than four million nurses in this country who provide care that is capable, competent, crucial — and often times, lifesaving. Read the stories of these nurse leaders: Doctor of Nursing Practice student Nhia Yerkes-Vang, Humanitarian Coordinator Diana Garde and Director of Health Services for Renton School Districts Laura Widdice.

U.S. News & World Report rankings

This year’s rankings solidified UW leadership in the health sciences: The UW School of Nursing held the No. 1 overall ranking for a public school offering a doctor of nursing practice program, and nursing schools at UW Bothell and UW Tacoma again collectively tied for No. 1 among public schools that offer a master’s degree. In addition, the UW School of Nursing Doctor of Nursing Program Pediatric Primary Care ranked No. 5.

We recognize the limitations and shortcomings of rankings that support systemic inequities. These shortcomings must be addressed to ensure a better, more equitable health education experience for all.

New graduate certificate

Three of our reproductive health experts Molly Altman, Monica McLemore and Meghan Eagen-Torkko unveiled a new graduate certificate in advanced sexual and reproductive health and abortion care — the first in the country housed in a School of Nursing. It will offer a clinical opportunity for advanced practice clinicians throughout the U.S. to learn how to provide abortions and other sexual and reproductive health care.

Engaging alumni

We expanded our alumni engagement efforts to create a strong, inclusive community of alumni. The All-School Alumni Reunion returned to an in-person event in October 2022, the Alumni Council hosted several events and launched an online presence, and the advancement team hosted surveys and listening sessions within the school community to ensure that our alumni relations strategy meets the school’s and our alumni’s greatest needs.

Strategic Pillars

Our strategic pillars successfully guide us in our mission to advance nursing science and practice through generating knowledge and preparing future leaders to improve health for all. To do this, we apply our values — diversity, excellence, collaboration, social justice, and integrity — to realize our vision of pioneering improvements in health and healthcare through innovative nursing science, education, practice, and partnerships.
