Two things set up a strong PhD application: a faculty mentor whose research matches yours, and a direct line to our team. Start with the mentor match below, then join an information session or send us your questions.
Connect with a faculty mentor before you apply
Your doctoral work starts with the right mentor. Before you apply, find the UW faculty whose research lines up with yours and confirm the fit. Here’s how.
Search the faculty directory
Open the faculty search tool, check “Accepting PhD Students,” and search keywords for your interests, like “gerontology” or “sleep.” Click any name to see their full bio, research focus, and contact information.
Reach out to two or three faculty
Email the faculty whose work fits your goals and confirm they’re a match. If someone isn’t available or isn’t the right fit, ask who else might be.
Name your mentors in your application
List the faculty who agreed you’re a good match, and explain why each is a potential mentor and how their work will support your research.
Questions about finding a match? The admissions team in the Office of Student and Academic Affairs can talk through your background, your research focus, and your next steps. Reach us at 206.543.8736 or asknursing@uw.edu.
