Child, Family, and Population Health Nursing
Assistant Professor
I am an assistant professor in the Department of Child, Family, and Population Health Nursing. Originally from Malawi, where I trained as a nurse-midwife, my career spans over 10 years and includes experience in both Malawi and the US. These experiences have shaped my research trajectory.
My research program focuses on improving maternal and infant outcomes in both Malawi and the US. I study the impact of stress on adverse birth outcomes, maternal mental health and its relation to mother-infant interactions, and factors such as racism, discrimination, and other social determinants of health that predict adverse pregnancy outcomes, particularly among Black and Brown individuals. Additionally, I explore factors contributing to adverse pregnancy and infant outcomes among African immigrant women.
Currently, I am investigating how life course stress, racial discrimination, nutrition security, neighborhood satisfaction, and social support contribute to pro-inflammatory profiles in pregnant and non-pregnant Black women in the US.
