Profile
My program of research is focused on improving sleep and health outcomes by studying the behavioral interventions and complementary and integrative approaches. My research has addressed persons with chronic conditions (arthritis, IBS, HIV) and persons in certain lifespan stages (menopause transition, older adults). I currently collaborate with the Menopause Solutions: Finding Lasting Answers for Symptoms and Health (MS-FLASH) national research network, and I am affiliated with the UW SoN Center for Research on Management of Sleep Disturbances (https://nursing.uw.edu/centers/center-research-management-sleep-disturbances). I recently completed two small intervention pilot studies, one examining yoga for sleep disturbance in persons with arthritis, and one testing brief behavioral treatment for insomnia in persons living with HIV. In addition to intervention-based research, I have expertise in actigraphy methods for analysis of sleep and 24-hour rest-activity patterns and also have experience and collaborations around analysis of polysomnography (PSG) and heart rate variability (HRV). I primarily teach in the undergraduate program, specializing in the instruction of basic nursing skills. I am graduate faculty and serve on Master’s and doctoral committees, especially for students focusing on sleep, pain, arthritis, clinical simulation, and complementary and integrative health. I am an active member of the Sleep Research Society and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing Psi-at-Large chapter.
