Dr. Willgerodt is the Mary S. Tschudin Endowed Professor in Nursing Education within the Department of Child, Family, and Population Health Nursing at the University of Washington. Her career is devoted to enhancing the health and educational outcomes of marginalized and vulnerable children and youth through advancements in school health policy, research, practice, and workforce capacity building.
Her research and scholarly interests focus on school health, school nursing, and interprofessional education and collaborative practice. Dr. Willgerodt is committed to improving health equity and outcomes for youth, especially those from vulnerable and minority populations. She is the founder and co-advisor of the Center for School Health Innovation and Quality and served as the founding associate editor of the Journal of Interprofessional Education and Practice. In November 2022, she co-chaired the workshop “Sharing and Exchanging Ideas and Global Experiences on Community-Engaged Approaches to Oral Health,” hosted by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM).
In 2024, Dr. Willgerodt was selected by NASEM to serve on a committee of experts to conduct a consensus study on the learning and development of low-income youth in out-of-school time (OST) settings across the K-12 age span.
Dr. Willgerodt’s landmark 2018 study of the school nursing workforce was the first nationally representative analysis, highlighting the critical role of school nurses in interprofessional care coordination and improving community care systems. The second National School Nurse Workforce Study, recently completed and published in 2024, builds upon this work, with significant findings expected to shape school health policy. Her research in Washington State focuses on models of school health service delivery, emphasizing the role of school communities and nurses in providing equitable healthcare and improving academic outcomes. This work aims to further elucidate the needs and development of the school health workforce. For more information, see the Landscape Assessment of School Health Services in Washington.
In addition to her work in school nursing, Dr. Willgerodt has led HRSA-funded initiatives to expand the nursing workforce, with a focus on interprofessional collaborative practice. She has developed and led interprofessional curricula and training for students and faculty, and she provides national and international consultation on integrating interprofessional education into didactic and clinical settings. Dr. Willgerodt is dedicated to mentoring nurses at all levels and actively supports efforts to diversify the nursing workforce.
Currently, Dr. Willgerodt serves as Interim Director of the Centers for Health Sciences Interprofessional Education, Research, and Practice (CHSIE) and as Vice-Chair for Education in the Department of Child, Family, and Population Health Nursing at the University of Washington. She also holds affiliate faculty appointments at the Center for Global Health Nursing and is a faculty member on the MCH-funded Leadership Education in Adolescent Health Training Grant at Seattle Children’s Hospital. She is a member of the 2013-15 Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation Faculty Scholar cohort, serves on the editorial panel of the Journal of School Nursing, and is on the Research Advisory Board for the National Association of School Nurses.
