Profile
Injuries as a leading cause of death and disability in adults. There are substantive inequities in both the risk for and recovery following injury among individuals. My program of research has focused on both preventing and improving outcomes from traumatic injury, with a particular emphasis on older adults. I am presently conducting research to evaluate how the immune response to traumatic brain injury is influenced by age and its relationship to outcomes following traumatic brain injury. Together with collaborators at the University of Washington and elsewhere, I am seeking to identify how social determinants of health, system and structural factors and health promotion activities influence recovery from injury. I use a variety of approaches in my research, including basic science techniques, clinical epidemiology, as well as qualitative and mixed methods. I am actively involved in professional organizations such as the Gerontological Society of America and the National Neurotrauma Society.
