Advanced Practice Environmental and Occupational Health sample courses

Students in the Advanced Practice Environmental and Occupational Health (APEOH) graduate certificate must complete a minimum of 15 credits. At least 9 credits must be earned in courses numbered 500 or above, and at least 9 credits must be graded. Coursework counted toward the certificate must be relevant to meeting APEOH program goals.

Certificate requirements

  • Core coursework: Complete at least one Nursing Science course and one Public Health Science course, totaling at least 6 core credits.
  • Electives: Complete at least two elective courses totaling a minimum of 6 credits.
  • Capstone: Complete a capstone experience of at least 3 credits.
  • Grades: Earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in courses required for the certificate and a grade of 2.7 or higher in each course counted toward the certificate.
  • Credit sharing: Credits may be shared between a graduate certificate and a graduate degree program, but may not be shared between multiple graduate certificates.
  • Advising: Discuss your course plan with your certificate faculty adviser at the beginning of the program. Quarterly student updates and advising meetings are required.

NIOSH Work and Health traineeship: Some courses below are part of the approved traineeship curriculum. Courses that are specifically required for Work and Health trainees are identified separately.

Core courses

Students must complete at least one Nursing Science course and one Public Health Science course, totaling at least 6 core credits.

APEOH core courses

  • ENV H 550: Occupational and Environmental Disease
    3–4 credits | Offered spring
    Uses cases to examine occupational and environmental diseases, including epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic testing, surveillance, policy and health protection programs.

    NIOSH Work and Health traineeship: Required course.
  • EPI 511: Introduction to Epidemiology
    4 credits | Offered autumn
    Introduces epidemiologic research designs and methods for describing disease and health events and evaluating potential causal relationships in populations.
  • EPI 512: Epidemiologic Methods I
    4 credits | Offered autumn
    Covers foundational epidemiologic methods, including disease frequency, study design, causal inference, measurement error, effect modification and confounding.
  • EPI 513: Epidemiologic Methods II
    4 credits | Offered winter
    Builds on epidemiologic methods with study designs and approaches including randomized trials, cohort and case-control studies, multilevel studies and meta-analysis.
  • EPI 520: Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases
    3 credits
    Applies epidemiologic principles to infectious disease research and public health practice, including surveillance, outbreak investigation, transmission dynamics and program evaluation.

Elective courses

Students must complete at least two elective courses totaling a minimum of 6 credits. Elective coursework must be relevant to meeting APEOH program goals.

Capstone experience

Students complete a capstone experience of at least 3 credits involving mentored research or a clinical experience developed with their certificate faculty adviser.

Students work with their certificate faculty adviser to complete the appropriate NMETH 600 or NCLIN 599 form documenting the capstone plan.
