Non-degree seeking status

Students who have earned a bachelor’s degree may apply to take graduate level, non-clinical nursing classes without being admitted to a School of Nursing degree program. This is called Graduate Non-Matriculated (GNM) status.

Once admitted as a GNM student, you will be assigned to the GNM adviser who will know which courses are open to GNM enrollment and assist you in obtaining instructor permission each quarter.

Applying GNM credits to a graduate degree program

If you are later accepted into our Master of Science (MS), Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), or Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Science (PhD) program, you may apply up to twelve GNM credits towards the graduate nursing degree.

Be aware, however, that if you are eligible to apply credits from another graduate nursing program towards a UW graduate nursing degree, your combined total between transfer credits and GNM credits cannot exceed twelve.

GNM credits cannot be applied to graduate certificates.

Eligibility to apply

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited school and in an appropriate field based on the requirement for your School of Nursing graduate degree program of interest. If a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is required, it must be from a CCNE or NLN-accredited program.
  • A minimum 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 point scale) for the last 90 graded quarter credits (or 60 semester credits). At the discretion of the GNM adviser reviewing your application for admission, this requirement may be waived.
  • International students on F-1 visas and holders of B-1 visitor visas are not eligible to apply for GNM status.

Important notes about non-degree-seeking status

  • Prior to applying to GNM status, contact the appropriate adviser about course availability
  • Course availability is not guaranteed; priority is given to students enrolled in our graduate degree programs and instructor permission is required for each class
  • All GNM applicants pay a non-refundable application fee through the UW Graduate School. The GNM application is NOT transferable to a future quarter if you do not enroll in the quarter for which you apply.
  • GNM students are not eligible to take nursing clinical (NCLIN) courses
  • There are six and ten-year limits on GNM classes used towards the fulfillment of master’s and doctoral degrees, respectively
  • Acceptance as a GNM student does not guarantee admission if you later apply to a graduate nursing degree program

Program & track advisers

Contact the appropriate adviser below for course availability before submitting a GNM application.

An ‘*’ indicates that the degree program or track is fee-based.

While many courses offered to GNM students are not eligible for state employee tuition exemption, there may be exceptions. Ask your track adviser if you can use a state tuition waiver benefit under GNM status.
