Non-degree seeking status

Graduate Non-Matriculated (GNM) status allows individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree to take graduate-level, non-clinical nursing courses without being admitted to a full degree program. Once admitted as a GNM student, you’ll be assigned a GNM adviser who will support your course selection and instructor permission process each quarter.

Before You Apply

Prior to submitting your GNM application, you must reach out to the appropriate faculty or track adviser to:

  • Confirm whether GNM status is permitted for your target track.
  • Review which courses are open for GNM enrollment and instructor permission requirements.
  • Determine whether your academic preparation and goals align with the track.
  • Understand any fee-based or tuition-exemption limitations under GNM status.

Contact details for each track’s adviser are listed below — please connect with the correct adviser before you begin your application.

GNM Accordion

To be eligible for GNM status, applicants must:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Meet track-specific requirements (e.g., BSN from a CCNE- or NLN-accredited program when required).
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA for the last 90 graded quarter credits (or 60 semester credits).
  • Understand that international students on F-1 or B-1/B-2 visitor visas are **not** eligible.

Waivers for GPA may be granted at the discretion of the GNM adviser.

  • Instructor permission is required for every class, and availability is not guaranteed.
  • GNM students may not enroll in clinical (NCLIN) courses.
  • Up to 12 credits earned as a GNM student may be applied to a future graduate degree (DNP, MS, or PhD), but cannot be applied toward graduate certificate programs.
  • If you are also transferring graduate credits from another institution, the total combined maximum (UW GNM + transfer) is still 12 credits.
  • The GNM application fee is non-refundable and cannot be transferred to a later quarter if you do not enroll after being admitted.

Contact the appropriate adviser below for course availability before submitting a GNM application.

An ‘*’ indicates that the degree program or track is fee-based.

While many courses offered to GNM students are not eligible for state employee tuition exemption, there may be exceptions. Ask your track adviser if you can use a state tuition waiver benefit under GNM status.
