WHO endorses 2020 as Year of the Nurse & Midwife

On January 31, 2019, the Executive Board of the World Health Organization endorsed a call for 2020 to be officially recognized as the ‘Year of the Nurse and Midwife’.

Nursing Now proposed that in 2018 and Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization became a positive supporter. The recommendation was made on the evening of January 31 in Geneva by Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO. The proposal will go to the World Health Assembly in May for its consideration.

Run in collaboration with the International Council of Nurses and the World Health Organisation, Nursing Now is a global campaign which seeks to improve perceptions of nurses, enhance their influence and maximize their contributions to ensuring that everyone, everywhere has access to health care.

The UW School of Nursing is committed to supporting this initiative and has taken an active role in partnering with fellow institutions (University of North Carolina School of Nursing Chapel Hill and the American Nursing Association) to ultimately launch Nursing Now USA throughout the country.
