Admissions Committee Standards

School of Nursing Admissions Guidelines for BSN/ABSN, MN/MS, DNP, PhD, and graduate certificate programs assist admissions committee members in applying consistent criteria to each applicant file. The following Admissions Committee Standards define the role of admissions decision-makers, including but not limited to the members of admissions committees, as a means of ensuring admissions decisions that are fair, consistent, and legal.

  1. Admissions Committee members all have a speaking and voting role.
  2. Members of an Admissions Committee for a doctoral program, as well as track representatives functioning as sub-committees of an Admissions Committee for a doctoral program, ought to include a member of UW graduate faculty with endorsement to chair supervisory committees.
  3. The Admissions Committee must ensure that no members are applying improper criteria to the selection process.
  4. Members of the Admissions Committee are responsible for excusing themselves from an applicant review if there is any possible conflict of interest or if impartiality is in any way compromised.
  5. Initiative-200, Titles VI and VII of the Federal Civil Rights Act, and the equal protection clauses of the federal and state constitutions all say, in one way or another, that the University cannot treat people differently on the basis of race, color, gender, or national and ethnic origin.
  6. The admissions and selection process are entirely confidential. No aspect of the consideration of applications other than the set criteria should be discussed outside of the process. Applications contain materials that are protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. The transcripts and other materials from the applicant's previous schools are "education records" that the School may use for its admissions decisions, but that it may not disclose further. No person outside the University can view these materials, unless that person is placed under contract with the University to help with admissions decisions.
