SoN HIPAA Training Policy

The following 3-point information is to clarify/facilitate HIPAA training for SoN faculty, staff and students. 


1. All students entering the UW Autumn Quarter 2004 or after must complete UW HIPAA training upon entry to the School.

  • Failure to do so may result in inability to enter a clinical site as a student.


2. Additionally, students working with patients/patient data in clinical sites may be required to do the HIPAA training that the site requires of its employees.

  • Each site's HIPAA training is somewhat individualized to that site. 
  • While there will be overlap with the training that students receive elsewhere (including at UW), the content of the overlap has not yet been determined.


3. Faculty and staff (in addition to students) doing ANY clinical or research work at UWMC, UWP clinics, Harborview MC, or Hall Health need to complete UW HIPAA training PRIOR to entering the site.

  • UW HIPAA training is conducted individually via a secure Web site, and lasts approximately 90 minutes. 
  • Please contact your department for procedures for UW HIPAA training.
