Step 1: Prepare the reference
Download the reference template form (found here). Be sure to use only this form - references that are not on this form will not be accepted.
- First, rank the fellow on the eleven listed categories.
- An explanation of the rankings is above the listed categories.
- To enter a rating, click on the box and enter the number directly. The ranking system is listed on the form.
- The second portion is where you write your recommendation.
- Type your recommendation directly into this space.
- The recommendation can exceed the space provided, but the whole form may not exceed two pages.
- Fill in the requested information of the bottom of the form.
- A signature is required.
- If you do not have an electronic signature, you will need to print the form, sign it and re-scan it.
- The form must be converted to PDF form before moving to the next step.
Step 2: ERA Commons
- Click here - you will be taken to a page on the ERA Commons site.
- You do not need to log in with your personal Commons ID to upload a reference.
- In the first set of fields, enter your contact info: first name, your last name, email, your affiliated institution, and department.
- In the second set of fields, enter the fellow's information: Commons ID, last name, and funding opportunity number.
- If the fellow has not given you this information, than ask them to provide it.
- Click 'Continue'
Step 3: Upload the reference
- On the next page click 'Browse' and select the PDF file on your computer. This will upload it to the ERA Commons.
- After you have uploaded the letter, you should get a confirmation email. Save this email in case you need to update the reference.
