Hi! My name is Jooyoung Kim.
I was born in South Korea and moved to the US when I was 2 years old. My early childhood was spent in Minnesota and later childhood/teen years in New Mexico. I completed my first bachelors degree in Arizona, then moved up to New Jersey for my nursing degree.
I’ve been a nurse for 4 years. In those years, I have witnessed health disparities in minority and low socioeconomic populations. Due to lack of health and education support in the community, many of my patients of these background would return back to the hospital. I felt helpless and frustrated as a nurse in an acute inpatient setting, so I turned my focus to community health.
I love the challenge of learning about new cultures and communities. Being invited into that particular cultural group, furthermore, give me a great deal of joy. When you find that link that bonds you to another person, despite how different we may be, it makes the world seem less intimidating and more loving.
I am honored to be a part of the CHN program as I will be among one of the best faculty and students in the nation. I look forward to all the opportunities and experiences in the next couple years!
