Clinical Faculty Status

Appointment as a UW School of Nursing clinical faculty member formally recognizes a preceptor as an individual who demonstrates excellence in clinical practice and/or community service. Because we highly value the education each preceptor provides to our students, we encourage preceptors to seek nomination as a clinical faculty member in one of three departments in the School of Nursing.

Submission of a curriculum vitae (CV or resume) is required. We offer several tips for submitting a strong, polished CV for your clinical faculty application.

Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Systems (BNHS)

Nominations for new clinical faculty come from current BNHS faculty members. If you are seeking faculty appointment, we encourage you to approach a current member of the faculty for a letter of nomination, to be addressed to Margaret M. Heitkemper, PhD, RN, FAAN Chair and Professor.

Nominees are then sent a packet that includes required forms and a questionnaire asking you to provide information about your practice and research interests, among other details. You are asked to return the packet with a current curriculum vitae (CV or resume). Faculty members then review the applications and vote.

Family and Child Nursing (FCN)

You may request an appointment to the clinical faculty in FCN or, more commonly, be nominated by a current FCN faculty member. The letter of request should be addressed to the Chairperson of FCN, Box 357262, Seattle, WA, 98195.

You will be asked to complete and submit a set of required documents, including an updated CV and one letter of recommendation. If a letter of nomination was submitted on your behalf by a member of the FCN faculty, it may be used as the letter of recommendation.

Faculty vote is held annually in April/May. If the vote is positive, the Chairperson of FCN writes a letter of request to the Dean. After review and concurrence by the UW Academic Human Resources Department, you are sent a letter with notification of the appointment. Appointments are effective July 1st and are renewed annually.

Psychosocial and Community Health (PCH)

Nominations for new clinical faculty come from current PCH faculty members. If you are seeking faculty appointment, we encourage you to approach a current member of the faculty for a letter of nomination, to be addressed to Karen Schepp, PhD, RN, PMHCNS-BC, FAAN, Interim Chair and Professor.

Nominees are then sent a packet that includes required forms and a questionnaire asking you to provide information about your practice and research interests, among other details. You are asked to return the packet with a current curriculum vitae (CV or resume). Faculty members then review the applications and vote.
