Hiring Procedures

There is a different contact person for each category of employee to be hired. Faculty hiring is handled by the assistant to the chair. Permanent staff hiring is handled by the department administrator. Hourly and student hiring, including TAs, RAs, SAs, is handled by the payroll coordinator. Steps are explained below.

Faculty

Short-term Faculty - Paid

  • Includes Sr. Lecturer, Lecturers, Clinical/Affiliate/Adjunct faculty
  • Position openings determined by the Vice Chair of Education
  • Appointment duration of a year or less
  • The candidate will be contacted by the Assistant to the Chair requesting submission of a letter of interest providing information about his/her practice and research interests, CV as well as compliance information that may be necessary for the appointment.

Long-term Faculty

  • Includes Sr. Lecturer Full-time, Lecturer Full -time, Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor Tenure-track and Without tenure and Research Professor, Research Associate Professor and Research Assistant Professor
  • Department conducts a national search
  • Positions are posted on UWHires and other national publications
  • Appointment requires a faculty vote by members of equal rank or above
  • Tenure-track faculty have 9-month appointments. Salary is not received during the summer months unless a faculty person has grants or other funds that will pay for summer salary.
  • Full-time faculty (including research faculty) are voting faculty in the department.
  • Research-track faculty have 12-month appointments and receive salary only from funded grants.

Courtesy Appointment - Without Salary

  • A clinical/affiliate appointment would entail duties in addition to precepting, such as guest lecturing or teaching a class section.
  • Nominations for new clinical/affiliate faculty come from current BNHS faculty members.
  • The faculty member will submit a letter of recommendation to the department chair detailing what the candidate will do for the School and department. 
  • The candidate will be contacted by the Assistant to the Chair requesting submission of a letter of interest providing information about his/her practice and research interests, CV as well as compliance information that may be necessary for the appointment.

Permanent Staff

  • Hiring permanent staff takes 4-8 weeks, and involves the supervisor, administrator, HR, and payroll coordinator.
  • Supervisors or primary investigators with budget authority initiate hiring actions by sending the following info to the department administrator, who serves as the UW Hiring Manager: budget number, start and end date, title and type of staff (if known), pay rate or range, job description, pre-requisites (both required and desired). If the supervisor knows the position will be professional staff, a position description is required, plus a research activities form for each research position, and those formats are available at the UW Human Resources website under Managers/Hiring.
  • The administrator prepares and submits hiring requisitions through the School to HR.
  • HR screens classified positions. Hand forwards applications to the supervisor. The supervisor conducts interviews, checks references and makes a selection. The administrator works with the supervisor and HR to set the pay rate, offer the position, request background checks, communicate with payroll, and finalize the hiring.   

Hourly and Student Employees

Hourly Employees

  • Hiring Hourly Staff takes 1-3 weeks, and involves the supervisor, administrator, and payroll coordinator.
  • Supervisors initiate hiring actions by sending the following info to the payroll coordinator, who serves as UW Hiring Manager:
    • Hiring name
    • Budget number
    • Start Date
    • End Date
    • Hourly rate (based on UW salary range)
    • Job description
    • Job Requirements
    • Number of hours work each week
  • Temporary hourly employees may work a maximum of 950 hours in the current 12 month period that begins with employee anniversary date.
  • Temporary hourly employees be allowed to work up to 1050 hours authorized by PI or supervisor approval.

Student Employees

  • To hold an appointment a student must be enrolled at the University of Washington with 6 credits for undergraduate and 4 credits for graduate. Student Assistant salary range from $9.32 per hour up to maximum rate of $19.94.
  • Students 18 years of age and older are limited to working 19.50 hours per week when classes are in session and may work more than 19.50 hours per week during school breaks.

Academic Student Employees (ASE)

  • Job posted for TA/RA/SA is found in Funding Opportunities School of Nursing website. Bring the material to BNHS ASE coordinator to post the position.
  • Graduate student salaries are based on the UW's standard salary schedule. It is required for academic employee to enrolled 10 credits per quarter, 2 credits for summer quarter.

Payroll

  • When hiring process is completed, information will be entered into OPUS system.
  • UW has two pay periods ending on the 15th and last day of the month. Payday is 10th and 25th of each month.
