Final Examination

The Final Examination is the declaration of, or more traditionally "the defense" of, the dissertation. As stated in Graduate School Memorandum No. 13, Final Examinations must have four (4) committee members present, including:

  1. Your committee chair
  2. The GSR
  3. Two additional members

You should bring two (2) copies of your abstract to your examinations, one in hard copy and one electronic.

If a member(s) needs to participate at an exam but cannot be physically present, UW Graduate School Instructions for Audio/Video Conferencing in Doctoral Examinations must be followed.

Before requesting a Final Examination with the UW Graduate School, check with Academic Services in the School of Nursing to assure that your current working supervisory committee members are consistent with the names officially listed with the UW Graduate School. Also be sure to check and make sure that you are aware of all of the final quarter requirements for the PhD program.

After the Final Examination, all attending members of your supervisory committee must sign the warrant. As with the General Examination, your GSR must fill out a report for the Graduate School assuring your examination was rigorous and fair. The GSR's report is emailed directly to him or her when your exam date and time are confirmed by the Graduate School.

Your must be registered for at least 2 credits in the quarter in which your degree is conferred. Your dissertation must be submitted to the Graduate School within 60 days of passing the Final Examination. You must also submit a BOUND copy of your dissertation and a separate abstract to Academic Services.

After satisfactory examination completion, your have 60 days to make any necessary refinements to your dissertation and submit it to the Graduate School. If this 60-day period goes beyond the end of the current quarter, your must register for the following quarter and the degree will be dated for that quarter.

A 15-minute appointment is required for final submission. Appointments must be scheduled between 10:00 - 11:30am and 1:30 - 3:45pm.
