Graduate Non-Matriculated Status (GNM)

Student Taking NotesStudent Taking Notes

APPLICATION FEE NOTICE:
Effective January 2, 2013, Graduate Non-Matriculated (GNM) applicants are required to pay the $75 graduate application fee required of all other graduate applicants.

Important Information about GNM Status

Because the availability of School of Nursing courses for GNM status students is not guaranteed in a given quarter, and because the Graduate School application fee is non-refundable, we strongly recommend that you contact the appropriate GNM faculty advisor in the SoN BEFORE applying for GNM status to determine if there will be a course available for you to enroll in.  GNM admissions CANNOT be deferred to a future quarter.

Please also be aware that quarterly GNM application deadlines are set by departments (e.g., the School of Nursing).  In the event you apply after one of our deadlines listed below, your application cannot be accepted and the $75 application fee cannot be refunded.

If you plan to apply to the DNP Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) track, we recommend NOT applying to GNM status at this time.  For more information about the potential DNP curriculum revisions that affect this, please visit the DNP 2.0 web page.

About GNM Status

Graduate Non-Matriculated (GNM) enrollment allows post-baccalaureate students to take graduate level non-clinical nursing courses without being admitted to a School of Nursing degree program. Up to 12 credits taken as a GNM student can be applied towards a graduate nursing degree if you are later accepted to that degree program.

  • Course availability is not guaranteed.
  • International students on F-1 visas are not eligible for GNM status.
  • GNM students are NOT eligible to take nursing clinical (NCLIN) courses.
  • There are six (6) and ten (10) year limits on GNM courses used towards the fulfillment of master's and doctoral degrees, respectively.

An applicant who plans to both transfer credits from a graduate nursing program at another school and apply UW GNM credits towards a School of Nursing degree is limited to a maximum combined total of 12 credits. GNM credit may also apply to residency requirements for graduate degrees. Acceptance as a GNM student does not give priority for later admission to the Graduate School for pursuit of a degree.

Once you are admitted as a GNM student you will be assigned a School of Nursing GNM faculty coordinator to plan your course work. All GNM students must meet with their GNM coordinator before registering for courses. Review the registration procedures and make sure you understand the one you will need to follow once you are admitted.
