University of Washington School of Nursing announces 2013 Nurses Recognition Banquet Leadership Awards

The University of Washington School of Nursing is pleased to announce the winners of its annual nurses leadership awards. The awards will be given at the school’s Nurses Recognition Banquet, to be held May 8, 2013 at Benaroya Hall in Seattle. This celebration acknowledges the many ways the profession of nursing improves health and touches lives and is an occasion to honor nurses and nurse leaders. 2013 Nursing Leadership Award Winners: Distinguished Alumni Award: Sallie Davis-Kirsch, MN ’76, PhD ‘00, RN-BC Chief of Quality and Practice for Ambulatory Services at Seattle Children’s Hospital The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes a UW School of Nursing alumna or alumnus whose career in nursing exemplifies excellence in clinical practice, leadership in professional organizations, outstanding accomplishments and contributions to the community. Distinguished Researcher Award: Frances Marcus Lewis, RN, MN, PhD, FAAN University of Washington Medical Center Endowed Professor in Nursing Leadership, Family and Child Nursing, University of Washington School of Nursing The Distinguished Research Award, which recognizes a nurse researcher whose professional achievements and cumulative contributions have brought personal distinction, enhanced the profession, improved the welfare of the general public and brought honor and prestige to his or her field. Distinguished Practitioner Award: Laurie Soine, RN, ARNP, MN ’91, PhD ‘09 Nuclear Cardiology Nurse Practitioner, University of Washington Medical Center The Distinguished Practitioner Award honors a nurse whose dedicated work and exemplary service have benefited society and the practice of nursing. Any nurse who has demonstrated service above and beyond expectations is eligible for this award. Distinguished Diversity Advocate Award: Victoria Fletcher, RN, BSN ’73, MSN, CNM, FACNM Director of Accreditation, Planned Parenthood Federation of America The Distinguished Diversity Advocate Award, new this year, honors a nurse who advocates for the needs of underrepresented populations and communities. This individual encourages dialogue and reflection regarding societal power imbalances and demonstrates leadership in promoting diversity in nursing. Each year, we ask our community to nominate distinguished nurses for these awards. A selection committee is appointed to review the nominations. The annual UW School of Nursing Nurses Recognition Banquet takes place each May during National Nurses Week. Every year, National Nurses Week focuses attention on the diverse ways America's 3.1 million registered nurses, who comprise the largest health care profession, work to save lives and to improve the health of millions of individuals, families and communities. From bedside nursing in hospitals, to leadership in public health departments and community clinics, to the halls of research institutions, the depth and breadth of the nursing profession is meeting the expanding health care needs of American society.
