I have a strong interest in primary care, autonomous NP practice, NP education, and workforce issues. In particular, I'm interested in professional issues affecting innovations in NP practice, quality of primary care, chronic disease management, low literacy patient education, and healthcare home. My past research has been in the areas of women's health and NP education. I've published in several clinical areas such as allergies and diabetes. Together with my graduate student, I co-authored the first national study of NPs' ability to request, receive, and dispense sample medications.

I teach in the graduate FNP-DNP Program. I have taught clinical management courses, clinical seminars, professional issues, and role development. In addition, I am a Faculty Clinical Advisor and site visit students all over Puget Sound. I serve as the Academic Advisor for 2nd year FNP-DNP students, and in particular, help students identify and secure DNP capstone projects.

Practice, Service, Community Involvement

As a part-time faculty, much of my professional work is outside of the School of Nursing. I am the Founder and President of the Nurse Practitioner Healthcare Foundation, a non-profit charitable organization whose mission is to improve health status and quality of care for all through nurse practitioner innovations in research, education, health policy, service and philanthropy. I have guided the portfolio of work in public policy, patient education, public health campaigns, provider education and development of scholarships/fellowships and award programs. I am the past president of two national organizations, served for 8 years as the Director of Corporate Relations for a national NP organization, and have served as a consultant to corporations and universities in areas related to NP education and practice both nationally and internationally. Currently, I am on the Steering Committee for Connecting Nurses, an international nursing award and recognition program. I was a Primary Care Policy Fellow for the U.S. Public Health Service.
