My long-term research goal is to establish a self-sustainable cultural and linguistically relevant family mental health promotion intervention in Korean American communities. I have developed and pilot-tested the Korean Parent Training Program to address three social determinants of health (i.e., early childhood, social support, and stress), as a means to promote positive parenting practices (i.e., behavioral determinant of health) and to decrease mental health disparities in children between ages 3 and 8. I use both qualitative and quantitative study designs including focus groups, content analysis, and a randomized controlled experiment. In conducting research, I use a faith-based, community-based participatory research approach in working with target communities.


I teach undergraduate and graduate health assessment courses, including advanced pediatric health assessment. In these courses, students learn to perform complete history taking and head-to-toe physical assessment. I also teach growth and lifespan development, which is a pre-requisite for BSN admission.

Practice, Service, Community Involvement

I am a member of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Associates & Practitioners, Western Society for Research in Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau; the International Honor Society of Nursing, and Asian American Pacific Islander Nurses Association. I have been a grant reviewer for NIH, NIMHD since 2009 and a peer reviewer of multiple journals including Family Relations, Ethos, Western Journal of Nursing, Issues in Mental Health, Nursing, and the Journal of Asian American Studies. I currently work as a primary care pediatric nurse practitioner at a local clinic and collaborate with local Korean churches and language schools to provide parenting education.
